If you're new to my blog feel free to look around. And if you haven't already seen the great blocks so far in the <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/p/the-virtual-quilting-bee.html">virtual quilting bee </a>(hosted by Amy of <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/">Diary of a Quilter)</a> you can go see them all <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/p/the-virtual-quilting-bee.html">here</a>.<br />

<br />
My block is called Mother's Dream and is from the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Wife-Sampler-Quilt-Inspired/dp/0896898288/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1373224450&sr=1-1&keywords=farmers+wife+quilt+book">The Farmer's Wife</a>. I believe the dimensions for the Farmer's Wife blocks are smaller and possibly put together using templates. I think this block also would be a good candidate for foundation paper piecing. But I wanted to write a tutorial that could just be cut and put together without a foundation. So some of the dimensions are a bit odd, just because it's on the diagonal.<br />
<br />

<br />
Here is the block layout. You'll sew the block in strips, press, and then sew the strips together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJZTA44sBvhaYUJo5yxftgx-8pSh7dvukCEQLshpAmtEXh3cC3t9hk4SBGRNQBjlia7nZeB3336cJdsT8WUaIezkK1WiRLKo1aPh6uJ9agPztr2eRTzFI5EWPUV2f6qFGdpTX42UZaxUM/s1600/076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJZTA44sBvhaYUJo5yxftgx-8pSh7dvukCEQLshpAmtEXh3cC3t9hk4SBGRNQBjlia7nZeB3336cJdsT8WUaIezkK1WiRLKo1aPh6uJ9agPztr2eRTzFI5EWPUV2f6qFGdpTX42UZaxUM/s400/076.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
8. Once you have the rows sewn together, sew the strips together and press to make the block.<br />
<br />

And you're done! This block finishes at 8 1/2 inches (8 inches finished).leighhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14508863734352087214noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720007828159711404.post-63116501315144870762013-07-07T14:15:00.000-06:002013-07-07T14:15:35.945-06:00twin baby quiltsI have been wanting to make a quilt like this for a while now and I've also been wanting to try making half square triangles using the first method in<a href="http://www.thatgirlthatquilt.com/2011/11/half-square-triangles-3-ways.html"> this tutorial</a> (the one where you start with a square, sew all the way around the edges, and then cut it diagonally into 4 parts).<br />
<br />
I made this quilt first as the test quilt for the solids quilt. I used Violet Craft's fabric - Madrona Road - which I got from my local Modern Quilt Guild - they were giving it away for a challenge project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Ofxh7wUG5kTzOvj9-AJ6wo7ulz_qo4qRMgTRAMEo0xDL6YKiWqV4pTnSvUsuwZ2QEAZ3Li4Hn25Xvgn9z7SZdSTc4DF7APdgTjIMSZ7ndF9-gKA1SyTo5fAW7ZrOmA5ADGpCN6NtYts/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Ofxh7wUG5kTzOvj9-AJ6wo7ulz_qo4qRMgTRAMEo0xDL6YKiWqV4pTnSvUsuwZ2QEAZ3Li4Hn25Xvgn9z7SZdSTc4DF7APdgTjIMSZ7ndF9-gKA1SyTo5fAW7ZrOmA5ADGpCN6NtYts/s640/008.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also found this perfect backing fabric from JoAnn (surprisingly). I kind of love it - and I wish it came in every color!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFxhWzX1l1FIzRI5-4jDWjze1hdNItisE7hv0xWVH5oC8i4yoIdwuaJKFQ6pOn8RfLQARof3Dc68GXYX_YsZj3ZjiGkerKu9mw6PHVqh7qIw-ym6VxucEHDmcBXjLjmJlSGv93UiIQOGg/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFxhWzX1l1FIzRI5-4jDWjze1hdNItisE7hv0xWVH5oC8i4yoIdwuaJKFQ6pOn8RfLQARof3Dc68GXYX_YsZj3ZjiGkerKu9mw6PHVqh7qIw-ym6VxucEHDmcBXjLjmJlSGv93UiIQOGg/s640/010.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The second quilt I made with a very specific color palette for a friend's baby. She said she wanted a grey quilt, and that she didn't really want pink or yellow with it. I dug through my solids and thought these might work. I LOVE how it turned out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I especially love the backing fabric. One of my all time favorites.<br />

<br />
This is the first quilt I made this year, and I actually finished it back in January. I wanted to do something with these larger scale prints (from Joel Dewberry's line Notting Hill) that would still show off the prints, but that I would be able to cut out of a fat quarter. I used <a href="http://craftyblossom.blogspot.com/2012/09/grey-and-white-herringbone-quilt.html">this tutorial </a>(by crafty blossom - grey and white herringbone quilt) as an idea for what I wanted. I have no idea if my sizing is the same, but hers is cut as triangles, and mine are cut as parallellograms.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
For the backing I was able to use this Primrose print and it ended up being perfect for the quilting. I just quilted it from the back so I could trace the flowers. The tension wasn't perfect on the front, but I love the pattern of it, and I think with a few washes, no one will notice. I think I'll try it again on a future quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And isn't this a great binding? It's one of my favorite prints from the line - called tartan. I love it. And I love how it turned out.<br />

Wow! I finished 16 quilts last year! That is my record so far!<br />
<br />
Thanks so much to all of you who read my blog. Even when I'm not on here much.leighhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14508863734352087214noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720007828159711404.post-58186159379105776202012-12-28T09:52:00.000-07:002013-01-12T10:05:13.324-07:00Man Quilt v. 2When I cut out the first man quilt (<a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2011/04/man-quilt-tutorial.html">tutorial here</a>) I also cut extras so I could make one for my husband. I had even cut the binding pieces, all scrappy. And like most stuff I cut, those pieces sat there for a while (over a year).<br />
<br />
But I sewed them together in November, sent it to my favorite quilter Emily - of <a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">Emerson Quilting </a>- and asked her to quilt it with the lyrics from the Beatles' song "I Will". One of the best songs ever, seriously. If you don't know the words, or the song, you should go listen to it now.<br />
<br />

<br />
Of course I love it! It turned out SO awesome! I will definitely use cursive quilting again in the future.<br />

<br />
So I actually started and finished this quilt all in the same year! It's a quilting miracle. I absolutely love everything about it. I would make another one, I think it's so great.<br />
<br />
Process wise, this quilt was fun to make. I cut tons of squares out of my scrap bin right off the bat. That made it a lot easier when I laid out the blocks to sew them together. I made 4 blocks at a time when I could work on them. I think it took me a few months to get them all done.<br />
<br />
Mine is twin sized, which ended up being 48 blocks. Six block across, 8 down. I used the same dimensions for sashing, but just made my borders a bit wider (4.5 inches cut).<br />
<br />
The original tutorial for the granny squares<a href="http://blueelephantstitches.blogspot.com/2012/01/granny-square-quilt-block-tutorial.html"> is here</a> - on <a href="http://blueelephantstitches.blogspot.com/">Blue Elephant Stitches</a>. I actually used <a href="http://traceyjayquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/setting-triangles-for-granny-and-mommy.html">this tutorial </a>to cut the edge triangles exactly the right size.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The quilting was done by my lovely and talented sister in law, Emily, of <a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">Emerson Quilting</a>. I'd seen this pattern <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bradyphrenia/7590001018/in/faves-leedledeedlequilts/">on flickr</a> and asked her to recreate it. She did an excellent job, as always. I LOVE it so much!<br />

<br />
<br />
I love<a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/90844172/alexander-henry-diamond-eye-fabric-black"> this print</a> I used for the binding. It's one of my favorite prints ever. I fussy cut it so that the it would look the same along all the edges and pieced it so the pattern would continue. It ended up meeting exactly in the right spot when I pieced the last seam to finish it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMy3JPgnp_7o3O-azGCduQFfVmU_TfHIDYIB5a94u7zPpQu9hmbrGaVeuTVZarkAxcw_OgYNkmYl6jwIYdXTRtOffoPjXP3hNigXMfm2K1QK3kMp6rnu1LHgjcZVu8fCCMlF0AskouBU/s1600/034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMy3JPgnp_7o3O-azGCduQFfVmU_TfHIDYIB5a94u7zPpQu9hmbrGaVeuTVZarkAxcw_OgYNkmYl6jwIYdXTRtOffoPjXP3hNigXMfm2K1QK3kMp6rnu1LHgjcZVu8fCCMlF0AskouBU/s400/034.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And the backing, which I found on super sale somewhere. I pieced a little piece of that Heather Bailey print in there, but mostly it's the safety pins.<br />

And I've had the fabric for a few years before that. I'm so glad it's done! And I also love how it turned out!
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I used this tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew. Except I ended up buying a 6 inch square ruler, marking it on the diagonal, and using it instead of the paper template she suggests. (If you'd like me to do a little tutorial on how I did it, let me know and I may post one.)<br />
<br />
These blocks were somewhat time consuming and rather small. I do love how they look all together, but I'm not sure I'll be making another quilt like this anytime soon.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">Emily</a> also did the quilting on this one. A kind of ripply water quilting. I like it! Thanks Emily!<br />

A friend had some and I HAD to have it, so I got enough to just do a baby quilt.<br />

<br />
I started hand quilting it because at the time my walking foot wasn't working well. I'm pretty sure I haven't worked on it for a few years (2?). I just need to finish the hand quilting and then put a binding on and it's done. Maybe it should be my new (old) hand project while watching TV.

Apparently I like to cut things up with my rotary cutter, but not sew them together. I bet I've got 5 quilts cut that have no stitching in them at all.<br />
<br />
Maybe it was sometime last Christmas that I cut up all the flannel pj fabric I had that was designed by Heather Ross. I was thinking of a winter quilt that would be nice and cozy. I've got a bunch of squares, rectangles, and smaller squares that I am just going to fit together. It would be helpful to have a design wall for this one. I think it also needs a bit more color, maybe some solid blues and greens. And I don't think I have enough for the size I'd like. We shall see.leighhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14508863734352087214noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720007828159711404.post-55035309343885299472012-09-26T16:06:00.000-06:002012-09-26T16:06:00.149-06:00WIP - baby owl quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I started making this quilt while I was pregnant with my last baby. He's almost 2 now. After starting it I changed my mind and made a simpler one for him. But I do still like it.<br />
<br />
I was trying to copy <a href="http://aquiltisnice.blogspot.com/">Nettie's</a> <a href="http://aquiltisnice.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-thought-i-was-going-to-put-this-away.html">Morgan quilt</a> here. I guess it isn't going to be just like it, now that I'm looking back at that one. And that's okay. I would like to finish it. <br />
This quilt is my favorite of all the quilts I made in this batch. I'm not sure what it is, but I just love the soft colors and the cute fabrics. (I am not sure of the name of this fabric, although I believe it is an Alexander Henry print. I bought it within the last year.)<br />
<br />
I started with 2 fat quarters just like with the <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2012/09/summer-quilts-hello-betty-matryoshka.html">Hello Betty Matryoshka</a> quilt. I meant to cut them all 6.5 inches, but messed one of the cuts up and ended up with 4 blocks of 3 different sizes. I added borders to make the blocks 12.5 inches unfinished. The sashing and borders are 2.5 inches cut. <br />
<br />

<br />
To quilt this one I used my walking foot and did straight, random lines vertically along the quilt. They aren't perfectly straight, but not really wavy either. I LOVE how it turned out and I will definitely use this quilting again. I know it's really basic, but I haven't done much straight line quilting because the walking foot that came with my machine was horrible. Once I realized that was the problem I bought another one (generic brand) and it works great!<br />

I will be making another one of these for my middle boy.<br />

Also, I didn't line up the background fabrics to make a zig zag like she did in her book. But other than that, it's mostly the same.<br />
<br />
I love those background colors so much that I think I need a quilt for me in just those colors.<br />

I tried a new quilting pattern for this one, which I'm not sure I love. It's kind of an oval with a line through it.<br />

But it didn't quite work out as planned. I'd wanted to make it a scrappy herringbone quilt with different widths of strips and only a small amount of yellow. But I cut all the pieces wrong at first and had to just do this instead. I think it still worked out okay. And I'm pretty sure my niece loved it. And that's really all that matters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGhBLpMEvJTO3OjwWdh964aBpW456H22z2ifzk_XbfKb3fr4T1L__vzQpjJbGCnI-DTI3t6CjK7eiRZJBVhDp9NA_aI2k5AsdM5Qdux9QTu7TJnHtCv2ZDsQhCheCj7ifArc6slBWY5cA/s1600/040.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGhBLpMEvJTO3OjwWdh964aBpW456H22z2ifzk_XbfKb3fr4T1L__vzQpjJbGCnI-DTI3t6CjK7eiRZJBVhDp9NA_aI2k5AsdM5Qdux9QTu7TJnHtCv2ZDsQhCheCj7ifArc6slBWY5cA/s400/040.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I had been hoarding 2 + yards of this orchid colored Matryoshka fabric designed by Heather Ross. I found that there were 2 prints from Weekends by Erin McMorris that went perfectly. Also - that Echo by Lotta Jansdotter print that is the exact same color. They all went together so well. And then that touch of yellow to break it all up.<br />
<br />
Once I sewed everything together I didn't like it. It seemed so busy and there was a lot more yellow than I'd originally wanted. I think if I were to do it again I'd add in some purple solids or white to break it up even more. I'd also cut the strips bigger and only have a few small ones.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxP_9XRAgeXghWrgTZvAKyeiEZCo6ZlLGrVJcwwouBUiIADfL-Ax7zobTakkFwKl6XXIXxzeH0VMKbWaeBgIqIKYk7VMiFPo6yfqxNBOo0l8jyDw7I6ryRmJoUizkhc8D-kSPlSC_a0ss/s1600/127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxP_9XRAgeXghWrgTZvAKyeiEZCo6ZlLGrVJcwwouBUiIADfL-Ax7zobTakkFwKl6XXIXxzeH0VMKbWaeBgIqIKYk7VMiFPo6yfqxNBOo0l8jyDw7I6ryRmJoUizkhc8D-kSPlSC_a0ss/s400/127.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted this on my machine with just a simple loop. I like the loop when there's a line to follow. It was a bit difficult on this one because I didn't really follow a line.<br />

The back is my favorite. I kind of wish it were the front and that I'd just backed it with a solid. Maybe next time I'll do that.<br />

I just didn't get around to quilting it until July.<br />
<br />
<br />
I believe the blocks were 6.5 inches cut (6 inches finished). There are 7 blocks across and 9 blocks down. Which would make the dimensions of this quilt about 42 x 54.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFozfe4KIOMqGwBkntM4tHDl_YnOnYdPf8nCnrS3YS9hnoVPn1ac4fAvRV5h12ZStGpRnTLIEoGbcR8GU37yDd87BOP_Cho-AERaHPPSqC0Ck8QJrej7mrtgX5eLVRx3o024fSd3JRRc/s1600/032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFozfe4KIOMqGwBkntM4tHDl_YnOnYdPf8nCnrS3YS9hnoVPn1ac4fAvRV5h12ZStGpRnTLIEoGbcR8GU37yDd87BOP_Cho-AERaHPPSqC0Ck8QJrej7mrtgX5eLVRx3o024fSd3JRRc/s400/032.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilting I used my walking foot. I made a small circle - about 1/2 inch - and then spiraled away from it about 1 inch away. I think spacing became further and further apart as I got closer to the outside and I think next time I'd try to space it at almost 2 inches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmLZLoYI16OZzZkBwaySxEL2HVGadHAKtn7NzzXU8B7hSk27mSeewwrTq-kEhraLEw9j6jxJuudl6v8JYKO7Lz8ybUGxe9TrxS6rURswGCbzGpc3wSLGlkVuTZmisZ0seN2CtUgxeE5PA/s1600/033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmLZLoYI16OZzZkBwaySxEL2HVGadHAKtn7NzzXU8B7hSk27mSeewwrTq-kEhraLEw9j6jxJuudl6v8JYKO7Lz8ybUGxe9TrxS6rURswGCbzGpc3wSLGlkVuTZmisZ0seN2CtUgxeE5PA/s400/033.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I really love how it turned out even though it's not exactly perfect. Also - this batting was quite thick, which made the quilting really show up.<br />

It seems like the summer flew by, didn't it? I did get some quilting in, but I think I burned myself out making 6 quilts in July, all for nieces and nephews. I haven't done much since.<br />
<br />
I'm going to write about them all in their own posts.<br />
<br />
First up - the Hello Betty Matryoshka.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUxQnq3WM8njEfRBkLR5qsBsaAoUAbeghI4X7IqTVYTSPqxKyAB9bTET1K7N0fscvBdcR9akqaxVocdVS8QREoMyfBvRjs1k55gp_RjKUN8Vecg_bBgGLXWWMri64OcH7Ha5nZJ7Izwd0/s1600/134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUxQnq3WM8njEfRBkLR5qsBsaAoUAbeghI4X7IqTVYTSPqxKyAB9bTET1K7N0fscvBdcR9akqaxVocdVS8QREoMyfBvRjs1k55gp_RjKUN8Vecg_bBgGLXWWMri64OcH7Ha5nZJ7Izwd0/s640/134.JPG" width="425" /></a>
</div>
<br />
<br />
I started with 2 fat quarters of this cute Kokka Folklore Matryoshka fabric, which I think you can still get online (it also comes in other colors). I cut those fat quarters into 12 6.5 inch squares (finishing at 6 inches).<br />
<br />
Then I bordered each square with white strips cut at 1.5 inches (finishing at 1 inch).<br />
<br />
Luckily I had some leftover Hello Betty fabric that was just the right colors. I cut several 2.5 inch strips to border the white-bordered matryoshka squares (ending up 2 inches finished).<br />
<br />
Then I sashed everything with 2.5 inch cut strips (2 inches finished) and added a 2.5 inch cut (2 inches finished) border.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilting was just a straight, diagonal stitch. Which was really easy because I just followed the lines of the backing fabric (which I got at JoAnn). I did have to buy the backing and the binding, but everything else was used from my stash.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The final dimensions for this quilt are 44 inches x 58 inches. Thanks for reading :)leighhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14508863734352087214noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720007828159711404.post-15377421490524996212012-08-13T01:00:00.000-06:002012-08-13T01:00:04.930-06:00100 quilts for kidsHi everyone. Today I'm part of<a href="http://www.swimbikequilt.com/"> Katie's </a><a href="http://www.swimbikequilt.com/p/100-quilts-for-kids.html">100 Quilts for Kids</a> Blog Hop. Thanks so much for having me, Katie!<br />
<br />
Today I'm sharing a couple of quilts that have just been sitting here for a few years. I had been planning to give them to a charity, but had no deadline and so they just sat. Then Katie asked me if I'd be part of the blog hop and I knew exactly what I'd do. I'd finish up these two quilts.<br />
<br />
I have a hard time throwing scraps away and I also have a hard time using them again in quilts for my house. So they end up being perfect for charity quilts.<br />
<br />
First up is my Hello Betty Scrap Quilt. The original quilt top is done, but I still haven't quilted it and the only photo I have is in <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2011/09/check-it.html">this post</a>. I used <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2009/09/tutorial-double-hourglass-blocks-easy.html">this tutorial</a> from <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/">Cluck Cluck Sew</a> and I had all these little double half square triangles left over. If they had all gone the same direction, I could have had a double pinwheel going on, but I didn't think of that while I was cutting and so this is what I came up with.<br />
<br />
After the center part was done, I added a few borders (I especially love the outer border), quilted it, and bound it, washed it, and now it is all ready to give away. I'm not sure which charity I'll give it to, but I'd like it to stay local.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-yOmTA1YzhiMDRsnXNWV89JVapRSNJWJTjFmkqoIgidEs0idMAqWqDCT02kUrQJH0l0IdKuYXpyEoIpbcG6yRxyr_BdjdBYv0rIGPfHw4LMu2G5sSbW18HQq0XBGxW3cJE2T6To6ivM/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-yOmTA1YzhiMDRsnXNWV89JVapRSNJWJTjFmkqoIgidEs0idMAqWqDCT02kUrQJH0l0IdKuYXpyEoIpbcG6yRxyr_BdjdBYv0rIGPfHw4LMu2G5sSbW18HQq0XBGxW3cJE2T6To6ivM/s400/014.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I happened to find this perfect zig zag for the backing at JoAnn. Quite the find!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4fQUBPrQ7DJE2xY94MxQnPNqcpmGvp0pb_ql7ZDCgErTpgUTO_K_PCmLwvTGNMbxJT_Yqpi9M1F4Z3-gQ0rbBR5Ajh90iB6TWyn-I22hItUuomm1366cVuTAXlehzL3Fo5CBWT9awZWg/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4fQUBPrQ7DJE2xY94MxQnPNqcpmGvp0pb_ql7ZDCgErTpgUTO_K_PCmLwvTGNMbxJT_Yqpi9M1F4Z3-gQ0rbBR5Ajh90iB6TWyn-I22hItUuomm1366cVuTAXlehzL3Fo5CBWT9awZWg/s400/016.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This next quilt was made from scraps from <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2011/04/same-pattern-two-totally-different.html">this quilt</a>. I this <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/larajanepark/3032414425/in/faves-30795682@N00/">flickr photo </a>as inspiration. It was a quick quilt to make and used up some tiny scraps as well as some bigger ones.<br />
<br />

<br />
Both of these quilts ended up being about 42 inches square. I think that's a good size for a baby or kid quilt. Hopefully someone will be able to get some use out of them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There is also <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2011/07/scrappy.html">another post</a> I'd done about these tops that has a few more photos in it, if you're interested in seeing how the blocks fit together.<br />
<br />

<br />
Well, I've finished my rainbow chevron quilt. My sister-in-law <a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">Emily </a>was here a few weeks ago and brought it back with her to quilt. I asked her for Denyse Shmidt loops (is there another name for this?) because that's my favorite and I can't do it at home (or I'm horrible at it at home.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I love everything about this quilt! It's one of my faves for sure. I originally got the idea for the back from Crazy Mom Quilts (<a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/math-facts-quilt.html">this quilt)</a>. I didn't quite leave as much white as I wanted on the left side or the bottom, but it turned out great anyway.<br />

<br />
Here's another good close up of the quilting. If you're looking for a good quilter Emily is very meticulous and is great at this pattern. (I think this is the 3rd quilt she's done for me with this pattern.) Go check her out at <a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">Emerson Quilting</a>.<br />
<br />

<br />
For the binding I used Alexander Henry Heath in gunmetal. I really love that Heath print - I wish it came in every color!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And there you have it - I do finish things sometimes :)<br />

It was a great experience! I loved making new blocks each month, some I'd never tried before. I loved making new friends and getting fun packages in the mail. When it was my month, somehow I never blogged about it.<br />
<br />
This was the fabric I sent out.

As of the beginning of March - here are the blocks I had gotten back. I'm loving it! Today I am only waiting for 1 more block, but I still have a lot of blocks to make. I think I'll make this twin size - my usually go-to size (that way, if any bed is missing a quilt, there's one all ready for it).<br />
<br />

I know blogging isn't supposed to be about the comments, and I know they were giveaway comments, but I LOVE COMMENTS! So thanks for that. Also - I have contacted the winner and will be sending her the ruler. Too bad I didn't have 100+ so I could send you all one.<br />
<br />
Now - I have a problem. The problem is that I LOVE to start projects but I don't really love to finish them. Something always comes up that <i>has</i> to be done, sometimes I just don't know what to do, or something else just pops up that is more appealing.<br />
<br />
Last week I started the <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2012/06/ez-dresden-ruler-post-2-snake-trail.html">snake trail quilt.</a> And while several of the other bloggers in the <a href="http://www.slmqg.com/2012/06/01/kick-off-ez-dresden-quilting-challenge/">EZ Dresden Challenge</a> actually finished their quilts, mine sits there with only 8 blocks. (The first 4 I messed up, but I'll still include them in my final quilt.)<br />
<br />
I also finished my 48 blocks for my <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2012/04/i-cant-quit-you-granny.html">granny square quilt </a>(pictures to follow as soon as they're uploaded.) But I didn't quite feel like sewing them together (maybe because I know basting comes next. I hate basting.)<br />
<br />
I did okay on the <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2012/05/teacher-quilts.html">teacher quilts </a>because there was a deadline.<br />
<br />
But what is my problem? And what am I going to do about it? If any of you have any suggestions - I'm all ears.<br />
<br />
For now, I think I'll start posting my WIPs (works in progress) here. Maybe it will help me to be more accountable? We'll see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJpwULrC-61Mv9IWSIq1M6YoQRms8FvrRqoB__yoDGr86673HxlwW3HNfUFyXjM_dH2SfnegO7LhsPRsbeYaMhLyacJenABDLvb0kFujfEpKYbZngjNQABP00eRbdxEbeaptGBhBqpno8/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJpwULrC-61Mv9IWSIq1M6YoQRms8FvrRqoB__yoDGr86673HxlwW3HNfUFyXjM_dH2SfnegO7LhsPRsbeYaMhLyacJenABDLvb0kFujfEpKYbZngjNQABP00eRbdxEbeaptGBhBqpno8/s400/015.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
First up - which is something I have been working on for at least 2 years (and will probably be working on for longer than that) is my hexagon quilt. It is English Paper Pieced and it's kind of my work-in-the-car-on-long-car-trips-project. I have no timeline to finish it, and I tend to like big quilts. So it will be a while. And I'm okay with that. I have a few other hand projects on the list, but haven't started any and don't plan to until this one is done.<br />
<br />
When this photo was taken, a few months ago, there were 88 flowers on the quilt. Now there are 110. So it's a bit bigger. The size of the sides of the hexagons are 3/4 inch. So they are rather smallish. Not the smallest size you can get, but not very large for sure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7B5zbAtaGjDxFKUNSej4thVihHUTx7sNBhUOcPTvcXXnJmEaQ1UXxJpiB8slGqPdr0oI6NKpO6yZVtQyP56dBZ2_y1oCTVQvdFSMtaV7GgjkZzraGVBy0ixtvm2MXSL_JeCx1NdLeMHE/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7B5zbAtaGjDxFKUNSej4thVihHUTx7sNBhUOcPTvcXXnJmEaQ1UXxJpiB8slGqPdr0oI6NKpO6yZVtQyP56dBZ2_y1oCTVQvdFSMtaV7GgjkZzraGVBy0ixtvm2MXSL_JeCx1NdLeMHE/s400/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The next WIP I'm going to admit to is one I started sometime in 2009. It is a Hello Betty double hourglass quilt. The top is completely done at this point and you can see a little bit about it <a href="http://leedledeedlequilts.blogspot.com/2011/09/check-it.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I got stuck on what to do on the back. I've got 4 FQs of the line still left. I'd be okay with a nice solid turquoise or dark orange, but I can't seem to find one (I've only looked at JoAnn.) I thought something pieced might be nice, and I kind of wanted flannel. If I would just decide on something and buy it, I could probably get my <a href="http://emersonquilting.wordpress.com/">sister in law</a> to quilt it for me. I just need to do it!<br />
<br />
Are you like me - do you have quilter's ADD? Or are you really organized and focused and finish one project before you start another one.<br />
<br />
I will be back with more WIPs. And I'm not even organized enough to get them linked up to <a href="http://freshlypieced.blogspot.com/">Lee's WIP Wednesday</a>. But I've got a long list I plan to post. Unless something else comes up.leighhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14508863734352087214noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720007828159711404.post-77595910488528348232012-06-05T01:02:00.000-06:002012-06-05T01:02:00.335-06:00EZ Dresden Ruler post 2 - the Snake Trail Tutorial<br />

<br />
<br />
I love this quilt. I cut this picture out of a <a href="http://www.garnethill.com/?SourceCode=K2W43B&cm_guid=1-_-100000000000000000525-_-9592291450&cm_mmc=Google-_-Garnet+Hill+-+Branded-_-Garnet+Hill+-+Brand+Name+%3EKW_Exact-_-garnet+hill&gclid=CLfEi76brLACFUEGRQodtXDlVg">Garnet Hill</a> catalog years ago and stuck it in a file so I could recreate it someday.
I wasn't sure of the name of it and asked around. <a href="http://stitchoutsidetheditch.com/">Elisa</a> found out some great info on it - thanks Elisa!<br />
<br />
Here is what she found:<br />
<br />
There is an awesome post about variations of this type of block <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2011/04/snakes.html">here</a>. It has tons of pictures which could inspire you to come up with your own great project!<br />
<br />
If you have EQ6 or EQ7 - you can download the <i>Playing with Snakes</i> project. <a href="http://www.electricquilt.com/Users/FunStuff/Lessons/July.asp">This post</a> will show you what it's all about.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=L-0wGUIoecEC&pg=PA25&lpg=PA25&dq=snake+trail+quilt+pattern&source=bl&ots=br9eR8cHSq&sig=yKHPnLle4A_RvLx4xGwBIH0Uw9w&hl=en&sa=X&ei=T4zFT5e3NqjUsgLl6_GaBg&ved=0CF8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=snake%20trail%20quilt%20pattern&f=false">This page </a>from a book by Pepper Cory shows how you can change up the Snake Trail (also called a Drunkard's Trail because it is related to a Drunkard's Path).<br />
<br />
And <a href="http://earlywomenmasters.net/quilts/s/snakestrail/index.html">this post </a>shows you how to draw your own block!<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">And now for my own tutorial on the Snake Trail</span><br />
<br />
1. Cut a 3 inch wide strip of fabric.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdLQwpxlOCLzVVUaLfqb725qC9hv0jo9qfyENG7TdoXZPdPG39540hF1FR05iwe3iUOWIJxHXSNynutepYn7OhOEZJL16QDmpGiWOjRMn61KBNBSIiaoCiv64s9uPVNB87cCMtPu3_mBU/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdLQwpxlOCLzVVUaLfqb725qC9hv0jo9qfyENG7TdoXZPdPG39540hF1FR05iwe3iUOWIJxHXSNynutepYn7OhOEZJL16QDmpGiWOjRMn61KBNBSIiaoCiv64s9uPVNB87cCMtPu3_mBU/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
2. Align your EZ Dresden Ruler so that the 1" line and the 4" line are on each edge of your strip. Cut along both angled sides.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-yPZdsaC9riWHx1ID3JBH14htBjRWuvzFocbZrt587em4syZhcyJHmDFcUl8d-UcPTLSB2TpYrKHCzodyR7HuyG_md2XdBNgJ4VAFxIZ4WanTfTyWnDXHbawTfi-0ucEVYYPyjseGhqk/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-yPZdsaC9riWHx1ID3JBH14htBjRWuvzFocbZrt587em4syZhcyJHmDFcUl8d-UcPTLSB2TpYrKHCzodyR7HuyG_md2XdBNgJ4VAFxIZ4WanTfTyWnDXHbawTfi-0ucEVYYPyjseGhqk/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You will end up with a block like this<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdqpBn3BdVBHWMiGX4e3yGgZIaKck1sqWtGcbcsoCzOz2Pd7g3A2YjOAkP6lw2PXGIB0hXgUT8Gqr7LXHchTNLfxksAsOi0_XiqL0_XcwiRXF9hiB-Ikh0WQXvXIlTmpZSunzXujd4LqI/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdqpBn3BdVBHWMiGX4e3yGgZIaKck1sqWtGcbcsoCzOz2Pd7g3A2YjOAkP6lw2PXGIB0hXgUT8Gqr7LXHchTNLfxksAsOi0_XiqL0_XcwiRXF9hiB-Ikh0WQXvXIlTmpZSunzXujd4LqI/s400/005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Flip your ruler over and line it up again with the 4" line and the 1" line on each strip edge. Line up the left edge of the ruler with the left edge of the fabric. Continue cutting along the length of the strip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSbSECeOrjoFC852c47oqKIblQbVXlAoy2E14FfeDicZTClBib8LQFpi_tJwBiC9Q2Eqe7zDLLpkhvIAZomZaIgsAJbbXNzoz4w1dqaVNHgRh5QSr77qyXR-1St_oXb75H_IoXEMBy1AE/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSbSECeOrjoFC852c47oqKIblQbVXlAoy2E14FfeDicZTClBib8LQFpi_tJwBiC9Q2Eqe7zDLLpkhvIAZomZaIgsAJbbXNzoz4w1dqaVNHgRh5QSr77qyXR-1St_oXb75H_IoXEMBy1AE/s400/006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You will end up with blocks like these.<br />

<br />
4. Once you get your blocks cut - arrange them so that you have 5 in a row. Sew them together and press.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIa8BK6nUSsHQpqGnb3FAO4PmFW08EaiYMj3xAOilL7MboMvC1sz_yKQ68e2ck_i8edNIGNDrReadS23yMCY_LYz5JjE6tngQ7W5pfVNHGOONye5d9BqWC2G_NkfuP8AtOLpsWnbR1hdg/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIa8BK6nUSsHQpqGnb3FAO4PmFW08EaiYMj3xAOilL7MboMvC1sz_yKQ68e2ck_i8edNIGNDrReadS23yMCY_LYz5JjE6tngQ7W5pfVNHGOONye5d9BqWC2G_NkfuP8AtOLpsWnbR1hdg/s400/008.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is what you will have when you're done sewing. You will need 2 arcs like this for each 8.5 inch (unfinished) block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbI4OcTe6GLsLwE3_84plZ2XbkCNyvKrrqyMxBWVioVaV-NOcCxMerfWqfI9VXi2WkiF8o7T2VCv_s7za6Z4Gl9kVSx5UDpMyCmab9lMUVuifytZxLn0DhbqY5lcoES9rx7la374_c7w/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbI4OcTe6GLsLwE3_84plZ2XbkCNyvKrrqyMxBWVioVaV-NOcCxMerfWqfI9VXi2WkiF8o7T2VCv_s7za6Z4Gl9kVSx5UDpMyCmab9lMUVuifytZxLn0DhbqY5lcoES9rx7la374_c7w/s400/010.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Print a template and cut it out. (Download the template <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/95901846/template-for-Snake-Trail-block-8-5-inch-unfinished-by-Leedle-Deedle-Quilts">HERE</a>). Make sure when you print it, you print it at actual size, 100%, or whatever it is that keeps the sizing correct for your printer. When you cut out the pieces, they should go all the way to the edge of an 8.5 inch wide paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You will have 3 pieces (2 corners and a middle). Cut 1 of each for each 8.5" (unfinished) block. I doubled up my fabric to get 2 of each piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib5dCGQN1sFLBb3_PLzdk5LKoRb8hVYl0c2p1OONPR53IeW4XoEG51GSZ2bgMfTK0zpP1cr4qT6n2MJSQLfwZ43CsBsDRGiYheNajBbli2Sra8VeUJYSpi7kjwagVA26XmJVbZjblcXVo/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib5dCGQN1sFLBb3_PLzdk5LKoRb8hVYl0c2p1OONPR53IeW4XoEG51GSZ2bgMfTK0zpP1cr4qT6n2MJSQLfwZ43CsBsDRGiYheNajBbli2Sra8VeUJYSpi7kjwagVA26XmJVbZjblcXVo/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is what you will have.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SQ7cLWE0MlH47x_WTJBc3NQm7eYlTeaM9l0w6UXBBQWJW2OZQ1MNyI0yaORHGpuCVgbQ5AJLfMy8HAppphFHs_FiYnCtuLjqPsBWuNUXO16w-BFqvgeljQzzgnJh70K0IsrQ39CRgug/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SQ7cLWE0MlH47x_WTJBc3NQm7eYlTeaM9l0w6UXBBQWJW2OZQ1MNyI0yaORHGpuCVgbQ5AJLfMy8HAppphFHs_FiYnCtuLjqPsBWuNUXO16w-BFqvgeljQzzgnJh70K0IsrQ39CRgug/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Lay out your pieces like this. This is how they will be pieced. There is no need to trim your arcs into perfect curves. You can piece them as they are.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEsyUtcv1hmEmRSqBIQWgacWigY3AmR15AW_lFUpcDAMt7Pzn9ktyqsf6VwXktAt79BvKSYkITQA59JxXmM5MIEEa7BaTuyGI8ZxOirrkWOJQy4mIHJc86t-8_ly3MMepVnafxJ81jpJU/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEsyUtcv1hmEmRSqBIQWgacWigY3AmR15AW_lFUpcDAMt7Pzn9ktyqsf6VwXktAt79BvKSYkITQA59JxXmM5MIEEa7BaTuyGI8ZxOirrkWOJQy4mIHJc86t-8_ly3MMepVnafxJ81jpJU/s400/008.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
7. When piecing curves, you need to pin. I am usually not a pinner, but for curves it is a must. Start by finding the middle of each piece and pinning them right sides together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNefS4C-dfDWl8fFiny4FQupcG-EHBWCYxSNmXuJmt6a-SCF2VR8wnJCn_-riTZSO7qoGCewZHoOoaYKc0X57nGEm1N9_kZGSimp85zty6Uci38_refO83jao-KktiFoSzg7G-F8Qc6k/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNefS4C-dfDWl8fFiny4FQupcG-EHBWCYxSNmXuJmt6a-SCF2VR8wnJCn_-riTZSO7qoGCewZHoOoaYKc0X57nGEm1N9_kZGSimp85zty6Uci38_refO83jao-KktiFoSzg7G-F8Qc6k/s400/004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
8. Next pin the edges.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNKe9rsVA4tmEabCw0VN4ClSTWjIVOXVIeJBV7toyZFvY6eYxotGCL79OyJDLmnNm-AadHz5Bvl07I7J-txU0Aa9nWf-1899RpAy6SQOnZaENqc8vhwxUQepWq8zmaiowKJ5CPs8ZZZck/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNKe9rsVA4tmEabCw0VN4ClSTWjIVOXVIeJBV7toyZFvY6eYxotGCL79OyJDLmnNm-AadHz5Bvl07I7J-txU0Aa9nWf-1899RpAy6SQOnZaENqc8vhwxUQepWq8zmaiowKJ5CPs8ZZZck/s400/005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
8. Next pin everything in between. You cannot have too many pins when pinning a curve.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8oCgmqrUm79ZZOAeDCg0RJvsSFzNvwOEryk6hd2HI4JQ73WgvPX4KpaHcppPsNOWcmKSli1GII_rBkjvQRfAlgLmOfrUmNgHypsivS4leEPxmXwk5rj9o-THCS_eCysZEueBXY-io8fA/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8oCgmqrUm79ZZOAeDCg0RJvsSFzNvwOEryk6hd2HI4JQ73WgvPX4KpaHcppPsNOWcmKSli1GII_rBkjvQRfAlgLmOfrUmNgHypsivS4leEPxmXwk5rj9o-THCS_eCysZEueBXY-io8fA/s400/006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
9. Now you can sew them together. I would suggest sewing with your background piece on top since it is a more accurate curve.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0eBcRyc7796c1yJuGc7_tIcnYfutayq2FSKQbpzWxiGG-3_paOOecckpp63Y66ByNYKieiCKc0ePilJ8frYXdTq_oF-bcEXv-4AJkwcLFyIU_IhjlZ3tGtuFdHxqMeJjjy07cP2075jc/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0eBcRyc7796c1yJuGc7_tIcnYfutayq2FSKQbpzWxiGG-3_paOOecckpp63Y66ByNYKieiCKc0ePilJ8frYXdTq_oF-bcEXv-4AJkwcLFyIU_IhjlZ3tGtuFdHxqMeJjjy07cP2075jc/s400/007.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
10. Once you've sewn all the curves together (4 for each block), you'll have a block that looks like this. As you can see, it's a little wonky. Sewing curves will do that sometimes. I used starch and steam to try to stretch it into place, and then I trimmed it up to 8.5 inches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiElSqQ4sW57D_j11N5SbSfSE-mPTTV6QgLM3a8N5IGfXZVhsX9ck03LHkItgHY3U7cK_knqTk7_hLF83J3yn4CcyN2id3t_hNY599_M_OUtVNlhzXfZhRxOfB014k3C96_cEBM5o6Xyg4/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiElSqQ4sW57D_j11N5SbSfSE-mPTTV6QgLM3a8N5IGfXZVhsX9ck03LHkItgHY3U7cK_knqTk7_hLF83J3yn4CcyN2id3t_hNY599_M_OUtVNlhzXfZhRxOfB014k3C96_cEBM5o6Xyg4/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that is how you make a Snake Trail block! </div>

<br /></div>

There are a few different ways to put them together ...</div>

I hope you're excited about this Dresden ruler challenge. I've thought of so many ideas since I got the ruler and can't wait to make something great with it!<br />
<br />
I decided to do a post about diameter since I couldn't find one out there. I wondered how long I should cut my Dresden blocks and how big that would make my Dresden plate. I looked around and didn't find anything, so I decided to make a chart for easy reference.<br />
<br />
If you are trying to figure out how big you want your final Dresden plate and how long you need to cut each piece, this table is for you.
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVD9uJ6nqcFbnakFZl74TbxR4mzr3OnaYX5klyrm-aseuvhU4ie5R5TPsbem3yLekKYesnQAiVNON8abfoWvipMpHziDDebPLF0ddMc0M9vQOW3z1rlonv2-ntjAbLtCphKQWGFsb4_Kw/s1600/dresden1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVD9uJ6nqcFbnakFZl74TbxR4mzr3OnaYX5klyrm-aseuvhU4ie5R5TPsbem3yLekKYesnQAiVNON8abfoWvipMpHziDDebPLF0ddMc0M9vQOW3z1rlonv2-ntjAbLtCphKQWGFsb4_Kw/s400/dresden1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I've included the diameter for a Dresden plate with points, and one for and unfinished Dresden plate. I've added some photos to help explain this chart.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've been trying to makeover my dining room and I'm almost done with it. And then in between that I've been sick. And this week I got called for jury duty. And then the kids are out of school - and all my time is gone!<br />
<br />
But a few days ago I realized that if I wanted to make quilts for my kids' teachers - I'd better get to it! My 3 kids in school all had wonderful teachers this year (I haven't been able to say that every year.) And so I wanted to make them something special.<br />
<br />
This first quilt is for a teacher who loves green. I think she likes owls too, but who wouldn't love that cute little guy. I just improv pieced the center part from scraps and then added borders. I wish I would have made the improv piece just a little bit bigger, but I do like how it turned out. I did a large scallop for the quilting on my home machine. It's something I've wanted to try for a while and it worked well. I'll definitely be using it again.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
This next quilt is for a teacher who is fairly patriotic. I figured I'd be safe with red, white and blue. I used <a href="http://incolororder.blogspot.com/">Jeni's</a> <a href="http://incolororder.blogspot.com/2011/08/giant-vintage-star-quilt-tutorial.html">giant vintage star quilt tutorial </a>which was easy to follow and came together really quickly. I did change the center blocks to squares, but that was the only thing I changed. I used my stash for this one, except I didn't have quite enough for the background, so I did go buy that. I just did straight, vertical lines for the quilting to get it done quickly.<br />
<br />

<br />
Is it horrible that I didn't make the 3rd teacher a gift? She told my son her favorite colors are pink, brown, and purple. Those are the colors I have the least of in my stash. And I just wasn't quite sure of her style. I'd hate to make her an entire quilt that she didn't end up liking. I think I'll be making her a Jane Market Bag and fill it with summer stuff. If any of you have another great idea - I'd love to hear it :)<br />
